IL carving

I conceive and carve works in stone, making pieces that explore line and surface. I seek to create objects that people want to look at and to touch, and consider the tactile and the visual when developing of all of my work. I enjoy carving in a wide variety of different stones, knowing that the colour, composition, texture and hardness or softness of each individual stone will play a significant part in the character of the final piece.

I make works for sale and to commission. Please click here to find a list of works currently available for purchase. Do get in touch if you would like to discuss a commission. My studio is in London but I also travel to work in situ if needed.

An important part of my practice is sharing skills, knowledge and enthusiasm. I teach in schools, giving bespoke sessions on making in three-dimensions, and also deliver workshops, demonstrations and talks about my work and my craft.

My training in stone carving started at City & Guilds of London Art School, where my course combined learning about carving in its historic context as well as focusing on drawing and modelling as fundamental foundations to develop skills in creating sculptural works in stone. The course also enabled me to develop my interest in lettering, a craft that I continued to study with Richard Kindersley after graduating. These elements still inform my work, which I see as a continuation of the millennia-old human interest in carving stone to make meaningful objects. I explore new forms of expression in stone, finding the distinctive properties of this material as relevant, useful and alluring as they have always been.

Before working in stone, I practised as an architect for over ten years, leading a number of complex projects in listed theatre and arts buildings. These projects recognised the importance of materials and craft in creating beautiful and convivial spaces. Having been close to the legacy of skilled making by hand for so long, it became clear to me that I wanted to work directly with materials myself.
